We all feel stressed at certain times of our lives, some more than others. No one is suggesting that it's easy to deal with stress or anxiety; we're all different and therefore respond to situations in our own way. It is also very easy for an outsider to look in and offer suggestions, but they're not you. Only you can make those small changes and shifts to help manage stress and only when you feel ready to do so.
Here are a few suggestions that when you feel ready might help set you on your way. If you feel you need some guidance or encouragement or are just feeling overwhelmed, then I'm here to help.
- Make sure you get enough sleep by creating a good sleep routine. Lack of sleep can really contribute to stress and anxiety.
- Eating a balanced diet: Try to avoid eating processed foods as much as possible. Cooking from scratch if and when possible, using fresh ingredients and avoiding too much sugar intake.
- Try to introduce regular exercise into your week if you don't already. Physical activity has been proven to improve mode and reduce anxiety. It doesn't have to be excessive. Just getting outside and going for a twenty minute walk would be a good start, or some simple stretching if that feels too much at first.
- Be mindful. When you make that cup of tea or coffee in the morning, think about the process you are going through to make it. Try to be in the present moment and forget your other thoughts for just a few minutes. This is a great practice to build on over a period of time.
- Breathing techniques are another way to be in the present moment. Focusing on your breath is very calming for your mind as well as body.
- Take breaks throughout the day. Get up and move around for a few minutes if you are stuck at a computer all day. This doesn't only stretch your limbs but clears your head. Maybe step outside if that is at all possible.
- Treat yourself with kindness and understanding, especially if you are feeling overwhelmed.
- Reflexology is also considered to be very effective in stress reduction.
These are just a few suggestions that I have to share with you. There are many more I have for you, but one step at a time.
